Directions: Find an article either in the newspaper or online from a newspaper source, Time.com, USA Today, The New York Times, etc., or any other reputable national or local source pertaining to local, national, or international social studies content (history, economics, or politics). Read the article and fill out the statements or answer the questions below.  You may not use articles on Entertainment/Gossip, Science or Sports.  Please find and read about important issues in our world today.  Because this is a current events assignment you are to choose an article AND event that is no more than a week old from when the assignment is due. You may do 2 per week- 1 for extra credit. 

THIS ASSIGNMENT IS DUE NO LATER THAN EVERY FRIDAY AND IF TURNED IN AFTER FRIDAY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR THAT WEEK.

This is not a critique of whether the article is good or bad. This assignment is a reasoned opinion of the issue presented in the article and how it is reflective of HISTORY REPEATING. It is designed to get you to explore your attitudes/thoughts/beliefs on various topics in the current world of Social Studies. Your opinion should draw on your own background knowledge and understanding, the information in the article, the historical issue/event it is repeating, and your personal views. The result is expected to be an exercise in your critical thinking skills.

Grading will be based on the following rubric:

20 – Entire Current Event assignment displays the following requirements for each question/statement above:

1. Demonstrates thoughtfulness, preparation, and accuracy.
2. Reflects real understanding of the story and the issues.
3. Follows directions.
4. Is complete, neat, and includes entire article.

18 – Current Event assignment is complete but lacks 2 of the above requirements.

16 – Current Event assignment lacks 3 of the requirements.

14 – Current Event assignment lacks 4 of the requirements.

12 – Current Event assignment or lacks 5 or more of the above requirements.

10 –Dependant on how well the “Connect” section is completed.
